One of Showtime's new series is Shameless, starring the excellently casted William H. Macy as the incompetent patriarch of the Gallagher family. The mother is long gone, and the eldest child, Fiona (portrayed by the endearing Emmy Rossum) is the responsible glue that holds everyone and thing together.
There's a lot of good qualities to this show. First of all, it is extremely funny. WHM is incredibly believable as the booze addled, brilliantly dim witted Frank, father of 6 children ; Fiona, Philip(lip), Ian, Debbie, Carl, and the questionably darker, baby Liam.
The critics have been kind to the show, but not as much as I feel it deserves. It really is quite genius in its ability to feel so real. When I'm watching it, I really do believe that this dysfunctional family is taking on hilarious, often ridiculous scenarios, as they struggle to feed 7 mouths, all the while attempting to keep the lights on.
Showtime really has been stepping up their game. With new shows like Shamless and Episodes(it stars Matt LeBlanc, and it loads better then Joey) and their existing and successful shows like Dexter, Californication, Secret Diary of a Call Girl, Nurse Jackie, The Big C, The Tudors, United States of Tara, and their huge hit, Weeds, Showtime is really giving HBO a run for their money.
If you can, catch an episode of Shameless, it will be well worth the 52 minutes or so you'll spend laughing.
